Just wondering how best to do a update of the vbulletin when a patch comes out.Is it just a matter of uploading a file and then it works?

Yes, there are usually instructions that come with the patch. Usually you upload the patch and run the upgrade script and it runs through a series of steps to perfomrm the upgrade.
