SMF is probably the best forum to use for any type of community.

*Its modifications are easy to install.
*So are its themes
*Security is hardly an issue, unlike with phpBB and some others.
*Lots of modifications and other ways to customize.

Lots of people use SMF. Even forum-owners.com!  (I thought this was vBulletin at first because of the theme(at least you know the theme selection is diverse!))

One thing that I have noticed about SMF is that it appears to respond quicker than the other forum packages I have used (phpbb, mybb and vbulletin.)  Perhaps this is due to it having a trimmer inherent feature set?  I wonder how well it performs for larger forums?

I use to be a regular on a larger forum using SMF. They started out with phpBB and moved to SMF when theys tarted getting bigger.

I havent seen many problems with it, except for when posting on a board that is set to the default smf core theme, it crashes in IE. That could just be IE or my pc though.

Well I noticed all BIG SMF boards, usually at some point migrate to a vBulletin or IPB board. I was at vB support forums the other day and saw about 6 requests from SMF admins, who want to convert their board to a vBulletin.

i would agree that the SMF board is a very reliable forum.. i own 2 smf boards myself... but i will probably migrate to vBulletin later on, as vBulletin has more functionalities than SMF

Do you have any idea why they want to migrate to VBulletin? I haven't used vBuletin, but I honestly don't see much difference between SMF and vBulletin, at least for my needs I can't see any reason to switch no matter how big my forum gets.

Is SMF a free software or do you have to purchase it? I've used almost every forum software out their except SMF, and none can compare to vbulletin. However, I really like the theme and feel if this SMF board that forum-owners.com uses.

Thinking of launching another website this fall and if this software is free or cheaper than Vbulletin I just might give it a try Smiley
