I've always used phpbb but am becoming a little frustrated with it recently as it is the preferred target of spammers and it doesn't have any built-in means of tackling the spam issue.

I prefer SMF. It runs fast, has a clean design and plenty of mods and thems are available.

I opt for Simple Machine Forum (SMF). For one I like its features and modules which you can easily integrate into your forum. Moreover, it is much more secured than any open source forum script available online. SMF has been tested and most users are happy users.

I've talked about this to few of my friends, while we were planning on starting a new forum. We decided to use SMF. The reason for this was it was free, but it also looked safe.
The SMF-Joomla! bridge was something we desired. The main website was designed using Joomla!, for easy maintenance. It was very convenient to integrate SMF and Joomla!, so that forum members could also access members only areas of Joomla! site. But we did face some bugs with the bridge, and currently the project is on halt due to lack of free time of team members.

Out of those choices I would say SMF... I've worked with a few others that you have mentioned and I don't really like the entire look and feel of the boards as much as SMF. However, I haven't been in the SMF admin panel, just the outer boards.

I'd say SMF, I like all the mods and skins. I tried phpBB before and I didn't like it all.
Someday, I'd like to switch to vBulletin.

Haha, if SMF wasn't free I would probably still use it! That should give you an idea of how much I like it. To me I don't like the look or feel of PhpBB at all, so that would be my last choice.

My web host has some built-in PHPBB2 forum installation method so I went through it. I am worried to see a post today in which someone was selling phentaramine. I think it is very difficult to save yourself from spammers if you are using PHPBB2 so I decided to use SMF now.

I would prefer to use punbb. The reason for it is that it is simple in installation, many updated mods & loading fast.

I have just installed the new version 3.0 and it is absolutely wonderful. You can create custom questions for the registration screen which stops the spambots. Also if I get a new member who pastes spam into a post, I just delete the post but not their membership. Then I promote their rank to "SPAMMER" in case they come back. I only get maybe one spammer per week anyway.
