I'd like to find out which phpbb2 mods people find the most worthwhile and use on their forums.  Links to them would be good so long as their authenticated.

I haven't done them on our forum yet but I'd like to add a quick reply box to encourage traffic to actually post on the damn forum (!) and a last topic posted mod instead of last topic poster.

I use the mod that removes session IDs from guests. I also use an anti-spam mod.

Sometimes, I use a mod that allows YouTube videos to be embedded in posts by users. Also, I make a mod that allows text to be centered.

I use phpBB.

I've never implemented any mods. Is it easy? Does it cost money? Are there any easy how to guides available for it?

I recommend the mod that I recently read about that will add a question or secret code word to your registration page. The mod is called Registration Auth Code (rac.mod)
link to it is (www) phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=552845

I also recommend the admin only allowed posting html code mod. This mod is called HTML For Admins

Another favorite mod is the one that manipulates the profile upon registration. When a user registers, the website and signature sections are removed, and they are not allowed to register if they enter in anything in that section (usually bots will do that!), this is handy for preventing a member registering soley to spam a website in their profile.  After they've activated their account, they can then update their profile with whatever information they want. This mod is called No Website or Signature during registration

One of the most appealing mods to me was the attachment mod. In fact, it was the very first mod I had experience with in changing codes. It took me a great deal of time to figure out. The thread on the Attachment mod is so huge over at phpbb site Smiley  I guess many people had troubles following instructions!  I think it is a nice addition to your board.

There are lots of great mods. I just thought I would point out a few that I have found beneficial.  There are more, but I will spare you the long details!

Have fun and take your time.

Hi, they are pretty easy to install if you take your time and read the instructions.  When you download a modification, it is usually a text type file that you read and just follow the steps in editing your existing php or tpl extension files.  Sometimes the mods will have additional files for you to add to your forum.  Phpbb does a very good job with consistancy and with supplying the instructions step by step.  good luck.  I will help you if I can. However, I consider myself an intermediate and not an advanced type user.

and no, it does not cost money to get the mods from phpbb site (as far as I know).  They're free and usually you can get some free help by asking.  However, they do accept donations.

The only modding I have done to my forums are for spam protection and to install custom themes.  I was considering using a mod called "inline banner ads", which allows you to easily place adsense throughout your forum, but many people have said that adsense does not perform well in forums.  So for now I am going to build up my user base and once it is wildly popular then maybe I will install it.

I never really thought of mods as an improvement on your forum besides for protection.  I am actually going to look through the mods list for some "entertainment mods" and see what I can find.

When I used phpbb a few months back before switching to Vbulletin my number 1 modification was the garage hack... they have one for vbulletin. However, the one for PHPBB is much more complex and offers many more features. This is one thing that I kind of miss from PHPBB.

I have read about Google Adsense mod. Has someone been using it? I think this would be legal to use. Once i have read on a forum, where this mod was listed, read terms and conditions of Google before installing this mod.

Do you have a link to the Google AdSense mod?

I have AdSense on my forum, but I put it there manually in the header and footer. I would love a mod that would add it in the posting area.

phpBB is under some sort of license (don't remember what it's called).
But I believe it requires everything related to phpBB to be free.
The only case that I could think of that would make an exception to this license is if someone was hired to do custom and unique modifications.

I use quite a bit and I am hoping that they have them in phpbb3.

Arcade Mod
Question Mod
Store Mod
Star Mod
Cash Mod
Easy Mod

Another one I am going to implement is RegMod once I get a game going that people have to register too. It's a very fun game and I can't wait to get it started.

Anyway, yeah, there is more, but since I haven't implemented them yet I won't mention them.
