Is AdSense the best way to monetize a forum? Or, is there some other better way?
The problem with AdSense is that it has low click-through-rates on forums.

I would prefer link sales to adsense ads. Adsense just doesn't work for forums. Also it would be better if interested advertisers contact the forum directly for advertisement. So including a 'contact for advertising' option is not a bad idea at all.

i agree with xopialaker in that adsense is a poor performer on forums. there are forums that make good money with adsense but generally unless you have a very busy forum in a specific niche, it is not the best way to go. affiliates related to your niche, text link sales and banners seem to pay a lot better than adsense for most forums.

Google adsense should not only be the main source of revenue. As mentioned, banner and text links are potential revenue generator. Affiliate programs could also be tapped but they must be strategically implemented. Forum visitors stay away from forums with heavy affiliate programs because they are as good as spamming. By the way Google Adsense and Chitika emini malls can coexist.

Not at all. Adsense suffers a very low CTR which actually means too few $$. I would not say that don't use adsense, but use adsense as well as other means to earn $$ from your money. Like I stated at my other thread, go for banner ads and text links advertising. I am earning more in banner ads and text link advertising rather adsense and combining both, I am very happy However I would like to state that it is not like adsense would not give you earning. I am making around $160/month from adsense also with not a very big forum. So actually more members/visitors to your forum means more earnings. Adsense is 100% recommended on Forums.

I use adsense on my forums. I dont believe that it is a very good ad service to start off with, but it is good to use when you start getting enough traffic. Otherwise you are probably better off selling private ad spots for a set period of time.

My friend has been using adsense at his forums and he sees very low CTR like say 0.5 to 0.6% only. I think that he should try CJ or other affiliates also along with Adsense as adsense doesn't give much. Also selling banner ads on forums can be a good idea as forums get a lot of impressions

Yes, adsense is better than nothing. It is discrete too. Most people are used to adsense. Big banner ads make the site look cheap.

Adsense does have a low CTR on forums but you still make that couple dollars each week I've also heard that TextLinkAds are a good way to make money on forums.

I have great luck with adsense but it is not my only source of revenue on my forum. I combine it with links sales and have sold some banner advertising. I say try a different things for a couple of weeks and see what pays the best. Adsense is great when you have the traffic to match.

$160/month for a forum is very very good with adsense. Where do you place your ads to get such a good CTR? I heard that before after the first post is the best money maker, but it sounds like you are doing well. Whats working for you? Also, are you using images or text?

Adsense works with some sites, but doesn't with others. We have been up and down with adsense. One day we could earn 100 and the next earn .01.

Please either PM or post here as I am really interested. Of course I know that you may not wish to share this information, in that case also just say that you don't wish to reveal any further details.

I have Google Adsense as my ad program but I am thinking about changing it. I have seen a few forums which are using adbrite or some other program. At the moment I am not sure about their click rates but I shall give all of you an update about it.

CPM advertisement programs are much better for forums compared to Adsense. The reason for this is probably because forum users visit the site a lot and eventually get "ad blind", meaning they pretty much ignore the ads completely.
