Does it both forum users if a site has ads on it?

A forum needs a way to bring in money, but I don't want to bother my users with ads.

How much is too much?

My brother took the ads off his forums because he was thinking people don't like to see ads, but I left mine on. I know when I am on forums I normally just ignore the ads... unless they make sounds or they flash or popup I don't think they are that bad.

Every time I have put ads on one of my forums (I don't do this until I have 200+ active members) I post a quick sticky about needing to pay for the forum.  If you are open with your users about forums costing money to run, they usually don't mind.

Hoe much is too much?  I'm not sure as I have always stuck to banners at the header and footer, and maybe a few text ads on the side.

I just recommend just using banner ads, the only one that turns off users is those pop ups, i know a few forums with them and most of their members left and joined a better rap forum.

i don;t have much idea but since this is concerning the forum members, I am a member at a lot of forums already. I think that it does not bother me because the ads are mostly at the header and doesnt get noticed much however I do see the ads always. :p

I also know the fact that there must be someway the forum owner need to make money, afterall why is he running the website/forum ?
So, it won't bother much Wink

I think for a smaller forum ads are not a good idea. However, if you have alot of members and regular posters, I don't think it will make that much of a difference.

Ads are fine, depending on its placement. If you place them in their face they will find it annoying. It's fine if it's somewhere else that people can still reason with.

Ads definitely turn off users, but if you can get CPM ads then you can put them in a more discrete area and it won't be too annoying to your viewers.

most forum posters already know that hosting forums are not free and the ads are there to help the owner out Smiley

personally, most of the times i just ignore the ads...  but some of the forums do have those pop-ups or pop-unders which is very annoying.. headers and footers are good... and if the ad is interesting i click on it.. just to help out Smiley

I have a forum where the members want me to make money to pay for the hosting and keep the website alive etc. They don't mind the ads unless it's too intrusive as they just want to have a good time.

Most users know that you can not run a forum without ads. They expect them and they know that you use them to pay for your forum. If using ads besides adsense, promote advertising that matches the niche of your forum and the users will find your ads useful and it will also increase your funds. I have several banners that are related directly to what my users would do and I get comments telling me that they appreciate ads that are worth viewing.

109 - Really?  That's interesting.  Would you mind sharing the ratio?  I've honestly never had this problem before.

I think it depends upon the user.  And the ads.  You do not want to have too many ads on your site and they need to be tastefully displayed.  However, I think most people expect to see some ads on a forum and are ok with that.

As long as the ads are not to obtrusive, then I don't think it's a problem. Things like pop-ups in my opinion are a definite no-no. Text ads, banners and the like are perfectly fine. At least this is what I think as a user.
