In a way ads turn people off, but if used correctly they can be beneficial to both your community and your wallet! Placing a few ads in your forum related to your forums subject can be very beneficial because it will give the users more info about your forums main topics.

However, I've seen forums where they have 10+ banners and dozens of text links. As soon as I visit those sites I don't even bother with them. To many can hurt the forum.

Anything that distracts the user from looking at the content of your forum should be removed immediately. Such ads such as flashing, or games that need you to "Shoot the Duck", should all be removed. I would really stick to Adsense on your forum, maybe at the top or the bottom so it does not distract other users.

It is a real turnoff for most people when they see flashing ads or distracting ads when reading a topic on a forum.

I think they do. It's annoying to see these big animated games on top of the forum that's about serious life matters, for instance. I block all ads I see anyways. =P

I have Google Adsense as my ads program and I think nobody is being hurt till now. I have got a few click though so I guessed that users don't like ads on forums because they are on the forum for some discussion . By clicking on an add they loose their focus.

Most members arent bothered by the ads at all. When I'm posting at a forum I dont mind if I see ads. Ads are a normal part of forums and websites

When your not an admin, you are a user, of course. I don't like ads. they are ugly and yes they are a turnoff. Take the mood of the place way down when you see Cheap Viagra Sale! right above your post.

I am agreed with that. Many users even click on ads if they would find something of their choice on your forum. I think all internet surfers support their favorite forums and blogs without any hassle.

In my opinion, frequent visitors will eventually get "ad blind" so they won't really notice the ads. Because of this, I don't recommend using PPC ads on forums.
