I was just wondering if anyone has come up with creative ways to make money from your forum in some way other than having ads on your site?

You can sell something to your members. Maybe you could sell shirts with the forums URL on them or something like that.

It is really difficult job to earn money form a forum because rated for ads and banners are very low ad if someone needs to earn from another way then it is even more difficult. Any sort of marketplace can help you, like you can see on sitepoint, where people pay to list jobs and other stuff.

What about selling link or reciprocal links if someone get a good PR? I think in this way we can earn some quick money.

I would suggest you join an affiliate network like www.cj.com or www.azoogle.com. Depending on the topic of your forum you can post reviews about related products. So for example if I owned a forum about webhosting I would review godaddy and if anyone signed up using my link i would get paid $100. This is just an example but there is a wide range of products that you can choose. So far from my own results I found that affiliate marketing is much better that adsense. You definately need to try it in order to find out

I know this still counts as advertisements, but it's somewhat different... In a way...
Offer to sell "stickies" and "global announcements" on your forum.
If you have an active forum, people would buy these to promote their sites and whatnot.
