Forums for making money is not a right idea and it can take several years to give you handsome money. I think forums are good to support your site because users can discuss anything there.

i started a forum by accident  Smiley

i was searching to start a membership site since about one year.
first i bought a ready membership site at ebay but have had some
problems with the seller. okay, i paid for nothing,  Grin

then i wanted to start a traffic exchange but there are now coming
up some hundreds every month. some which are promoted by the
existing top TE - owners are quite successful but some do not exist
one or two months.

then i started a mail-account company. short story: i offered the first
month free membership, a spammer joined, sent out some hundred thousand
mails and my account was closed by the hosting company.
they saw what happened and we agreed to cancel my hosting and i closed
this little company.

by accident i stumbled over an ad asking why not earn money as a forum owner.
i got a free ebook ( nowadays you get a free ebook for everything  Smiley )
read it and thought about some days.

then i thought: why not to try.
the reasons for starting:

i made friend with that idea.
i can advertise my other opportunities for free.
i want to make some money.
writing with and learning from others.
finding tips, and interesting tools, programs and opportunities.
others will contact you about JV's or special offers which you will
no get otherwise.

if that will be successful why not start some other forums ?

very less money to start.

thank you for your time.

I think majority of webmasters start forums for content and traffic. That is a good way to get some PR or position in SERPs but forums are more useful than that. I always browse many forums like oracle's or Microsoft's, their purpose for forums is different.

I run my forum (in siganture) for one simple reason! to help other forums, i dont care if the forum is direct competition, who cares about competition when it comes to a niche of helping forums Smiley

building a community is rewarding, if successful there is the potential for income, as well as making friends, and expanding a growing network of sites.
