I am just curious as to when YOU personally start a new forum, do you have a business plan, and budget?

What is your usual budget for a new forum?

With AND WITHOUT Advertising?

I am just curious as to what to set my budget at...

I am thinking:

85$ vB
120$ Design
100+$ Coding
100+$ Advertising
100+$ Seo/promoting

Is 500$ A good budget for a new forum, that is SERIOUS? Or what?

seems good to me.  however, you might want to buy vB outright instead of leasing at $85/year.

I think itd be smarter just to lease it,

1) If the forum flops, I didnt waste the extra money.
2) If the forum is sucsesfull, I should be getting some sort of revnue to THEN pay for it all.
3) Now adays everyone is trying to sell owned vB licenses, and no one ever does.

i see owned licenses being sold frequently. the problem is people do not read or understand the Jelsoft's stipulations regarding selling owned licenses.  if you bought an owned license at the outset, you stand a high chance of reselling it and recovering something should your forum flop. if you lease the license you are guaranteed to get nothing back on the license fee as leased licenses are not legally resellable or transferable.  also, if you buy the license, you can  use it on another site later if you decide to have a go at another forum, or add a forum to an already developed site.

I haven't fixed any budget at the moment. I am using a free from setup which is PHPBB. I think there is nothing wrong with it, there are some security issue but these can be covered by some mods. Implementing SEO myself and even customizing its design myself.
