it seems as though more and more forums have portal type front pages.  what advantages/disadvantages are there for starting out with a portal front page over introducing it later?

I think portals are a terrible thing to do to a forum, since not a lot of them are 100% Customizable, and they all look so boring and the same. I think if you want a real website to go along with your forum, you should invest in a real custom website, Because most forum portals look so alike these days, and offer the same things, its like how PHP-NUKE was so popular when it came out, but everyone started to use it, and the way PHP-Nuke displays it self, and works, anyone with a basic knowledge of websites, could tell it was PHP-NUKE Right off the bat...

I will do it at starting stage and try customize as much as possible.
Adding it later must need much more engineering aas I will avoid it. Smiley
