Try to answer this one in the mode of thinking of a forum user rather than a forum admin.

I have always been more interested in the content of the forum than the way it looks. Keep in mind, though, that this poll might be skewed as most of us posting probably used BBSs (which were plain ugly) back in the day. At least I did- Am I showing my age?

i like some of the default skins of the various packages. but i agree with DigitalDiva it is usually the content that makes me stick around on a forum. however an excellent unique skin might make me look more into a forum even if i am not so keen on the content.

Yes, good question. I think a good skin does hold my attention a little more at the first glimpse of a new forum. However, if the content is good then I will usually stay irrespective of the skin.

Yes, when it's using the default skin I just leave. It doesn't seem unique to me...

I actually like the vBulletin default skin. Nice clean, straighforward design with which I am familiar

i personally dont pay attention to the theme of the forum i am posting on... I pay more attention to the functionalities of a forum... I like the vBulletin because it's more powerful than any other forums... the only problem is it's not free, therefore, i dont own one...
i dont use the default theme on my forums because they dont exactly blend with my site... which is ran by Joomla CMS

I base my use of a forum on the content. I have been to some forum that are so pretty with all kinds of upgrades and a great looking skin but no good topics or content. I have almost become blind to the skins because a good forum is a full forum so to me the skin means nothing.

Actually answering this as an admin or users makes no difference to me. I don't join forums to admire the pretty designs. I join forums to get something useful out of it. The content of the forum and what is being discussed is almost all that matters to me. I still have the default theme on my forum, well save a few minor modifications, but it doesn't seem to deter anyone, and I rather like it.

I do pay less attention, because I straight away think that it is run by someone who does not know what they are doing, or is only new.

Yes, I will pay lees attention to it. Maybe I will change to other skin to avoid the 'uniform' feeling as many others forums.

It just depends on which forum software. Some of them have pretty nice default vbulletin skins. On the other hand, vbulletin I think needs something custom. I can barely stand the purple they use as their default theme.

It just depends on which forum software. I agree with the first part of your post. I like Invision Boards Default skins. Expecially the new 2.3.0 one. MyBB, for example, has a horrendous default skin I can't bare to stare at. Sometimes I pay more attention to skins with defaults because they're not those super advanced custom skins that take 5 minutes to load a page. Hell, there are some custom skins that you can't even read because it is so messed up looking. Still, default skins can tend to show a lack of knowledge to install a custom skin. I have mixed feelings about this subject, let's just say.

As a forum user, I do not know if I would notice. As a forum owner, I notice right away when a forum has the default theme. To me, this seems tacky and unprofessional. I think to myself that if the quality of the forum probably is no good, since the owner did not even put the time into using a custom theme.

I think custom themes and design always make your forum attractive and You can let your users stay for several hours. Sometime we have to tolerate a deficiency in our traffic because many custom skins make your forum dead slow. Whatever it is, we should test it well on low internet speed connections.
