I believe that using a custom skin/theme makes it look much better and it also makes it that much more professional as well. But hey, that is just my opinion.

I always find option for a default theme option when I browse a forum with custom skin, I might be wrong but there are many forums which became dead slow with custom skins. A little alteration to a default skin works very fine.

I feel that a forum with the default theme is not as attractive as one with a theme. Even a free theme is better then the stock out of the box look in my opinion.
