I am thinking of making one of my moderators a senior moderator. To do this, I am planning to pay that person a percentage of the ad earnings. Is this a good idea and what percentage would be fair? My forum has seven unpaid moderators now and it is getting bigger than I can handle without another person to really oversee things. Is it a good idea to hire a senior moderator for pay? Any suggestions would be helpful.  Smiley

Hi,

I had this same idea although my forums are not yet big enough to require mods or senior mods. I thought about giving each mod 5-10% of total ad earning. I think it is a great idea because the mods then have an incentive to help bring in more members (since more members and greater forum activity might translate in to greater earnings for them.) However, it does entail a degree of extra trust as you'd have to ensure that mods aren't intentionally clicking PPC ads inflate their earnings...

I agree, you need a whole lot of trust. I have narrowed it down to to of my current mods but I am just going to pay one who I will give the keys to the kingdom so to speak. I have talked to the other mods and they know what I am thinking and are ok with it. Do you think they will still be ok when i pick one? Any idea what would be a fair percentage to pay?

Any idea what would be a fair percentage to pay?

That would probably depend on the total you are earning monthly from ad revenue.  But your question does beg the broader question of how much is a reasonable amount to pay mods? I always thought a minimum of $20/month was reasonable.  So if you are pulling in about $200/month from ad revenue on your forum then  10% to 15% might be a very reasonable offer.

I wonder what others here think... ?

Like I've said several other times.
Moderators don't need to be paid at all.
The only reason I want to be moderators at forums is to have a rank above the registered users.
