If someone asks to be a mod, do ever allow them to be? Under what conditions?
I get worried to trust someone who has just recently joined the forum.

Unless I know the person, I usually make it a requirement that mods have at least 200 posts under their belt. That usually eliminates noobs from asking and by reviewing their past posting you can gain some insight in to the person.

Another good way to tell if the person is worthy of becomming a mod on your forum is by how well liked he is. Although you would think this shouldnt be a factor, as long as the person does a good job, it is. A rude mod will most likely cause a drop in the percentage of people that return to your forum.

Its best to wait and only consider them who have a good post count and nice reputation on the forums. For me, most of the time, it has been my friends who became mods/admins, so choice wasn't a problem.

I always stick with the people who have a high post count and who seem to care about the community they are a part of. I NEVER give mod status to people who ask.

If someone has just recently joined a forum I would not make them a moderator, even if I know them personally. It just creates a bad spirit around the forum in my opinion because there are genuine people out there that post on your forum daily and don't get the chance to be a moderator.

the truth is.. you CAN'T trust a mod.. Which is why there called 3rd Party addons. They aren't support by the actual software dev. team. So when you use them, your using them at your OWN risk. Some people don't care, because they like the hack too much.

I have a sub-forum where people can apply for moderator status. They can only apply if they have 50+ rep (I'm using VBulletin) and 250+ posts; this eliminates most of the noobs and makes it less time-consuming. People with 50+ rep means that they are trustful/helpful, the 250+ posts part is required because being active is an essential part of a mod.
