I notice that most forum softwares come with URLs that are not search-engine-friendly. So, we have to apply mods or hacks to the forum to get rid of them.

Since most forum owners want their forums to get indexed by search engines, why don't the programmers make them search engine friendly by default? Why do they usually make URLs that use SIDs and such?

Most forums come with a basic URL form that is unique, most likely patented.

They make the URL very customizable, and not everyone wants SEO for their forum the way you may want it, so these regular URLs make it easier for the user to change the default to their own likings.

SMF comes with SE-friendly urls by default, but you have to switch them on and I heard the next full release of myBB will have them too.

I have seen this issue raised on forum software sites and it seems like the common response from the developers is that their main goals are offering functionality.  SEF urls are not considered fundamental to the functionality of the forum software and are therefore not given a lot of time.

From a personal perspective, there are many things included in forum software that are less important than SEF urls (like smilies, avatars, BB code and all that guff...)

I can understand them wanting to offer functionality, but there are simple mods that do the job and keep the functionality. I don't see why they don't add the option in the admin center by default. If someone wants Guest IDs, then let them be allowed to set it as such in the config file. It's so easy to get rid of the SIDs, so why do they not have an option to do it by default? That's a good question.

What it means? Are you talking about internal directory structure or what? How to switch that?

Its because all the softwares mostly concentrate on the services/features and they leave it on the users to get exposure.

But I have noticed in SMF that there is a plugin that gets all the URLs SEOed. I'm using it on my forums.
