I would say the second one is better. If I remember correctly I think Google indexes subpages easier than a sub-domain. I like the look of the second one better also.

The subdomain will be counted as another website, so you rankings will be divided up between the two. Plus, the forums won't help your main site.

90% forum using the second one.

but if you have a very strong sub domain forum;

treat it a single website to calculate and more easier to be managed. Smiley

I could never know this. I was happy to add sub-domain for my forum but I am worried now. Should I shift it to a directory instead of sub-domain?

We can see that now people are preferring sub domains for forums more than a directory link. I think there is no difference between both because your sub domain is also another folder in the base directory.

You can also cover both bases and have your forums based at, say, forums.mydomain.com and then use a 301 redirect at mydomain.com/forums  Smiley

Does it mean that we should register a sub-domain with our host and then redirect it to directory via 301 redirect?

Yes that will be better... Just make the forum in a sub directory and then do the redirect to mydomain.com/forum from forum.mydomain.com

I see many forums using this method. It works. You'll have more chances to get higher rankings in SEs

Doesn't cPanel automatically create a directory on the root domain that works with the sub domain?
For example, if you were to go to forums.site.com, it would be the same as if you went to site.com/forums?

I have a forum attached on sub-domain but I have decided to change it. I think Sub-Domains don't support well and all your efforts are purely for a sub-domain. Content will no counted as well so I shall go with the 2nd choice.
