Tackling forum spammers on phpbb?
«
on:

The last month has seen a massive surge in the amount of spammers I get at my phpbb based forums. Usually I go in to mysql and hack them out but this is time consuming and to be honest I am not sure whether I am damaging the database or forum in any way by doing this. Are there easier and more practical methods to tackle phpbb spamming?

sounds a bit obvious, but have you set your posting to registered users only?

Yes, I have it set to registered users only. I get between 10 and 20 auto registrations per day, and they frequently leave spam comments soon after registering.
I found this mod that but am a little reluctant to add it until I get a chance to test it. Has anyone else used it and what were the results?

Hi doddy,
Which mod did you think about using? Didn't see a link in your post.

Yes I'd be interested to find out what mod that is too.
I'm going to make a post to find out which mods are most popular/successful with phpbb2 in the phpbb forum - if you have any others installed perhaps you could let me know as I'm trying to decide which ones might be useful for our forum.
Thanks.

One way in which I have tackled phpBB forum spam in the past is to add a required custom field to the sign up process. The reason this often cuts out spam is because the signup/spam bots usually (though not always) work on the basis of a default installation and therefore do not know how to tackle to new field.

Sorry about that guys. Here is the link
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=435702
I have used it on a test installation of phpbb and it works well. My live copies have various other mods installed so I wanted to test whether this mod works well with them.
Has anyone used this mod?

I found a mod that disallows users from posting links until after they post a certain number of posts. The number of posts is customizable in the admin panel. This eliminated spammers almost completely.

That sounds like another good approach, coolguy85. Do you have a link to the mod you use?
