If a forum owner has no money to spend, what's the quickest way to promote a forum and get it active?

1) forum posting exchange

2) talk to yourself until people start chiming in.  This could take a while and a lot of effort.

3) Tell similar blogs about your forum.  Maybe someone will blog about it and that should draw quite a few new users.

Create a couple of fake user names. Use a couple of family members or real friends names and then make some posts as if you were speaking as them.  Of course you don't want to say .. HI! It's me, your brother!

What I mean is you can speak about some things that your family or friends have experienced. These will make some interesting topics.

I do not recommend creating a bunch of inactive user accounts.  I am merely suggesting that you put some content on the site that is enjoyable to read and debate on.

also keep the number of subforums down to a handful at most. i am unsure about you but to me a forum with 2 subforum each with 150 posts appears to be a whole lot busier than a forum with 15 subforums of 20 posts each. i know its an illusion really but i think it rings true.

-post to other forums related to your forum and add your forum url to your signature.
-it is very important that your posts in the other forums are very informative and very friendly
-PM members in other forums to join your site
-make sure that your site gets indexed in google
-create a sitemap for your site so search engines can crawl your site faster

Like what they said, talk to yourself, eventhough it sounds a little crazy. Create interesting threads and then answer using your other username. You can also ask your family or friends to sign-up.

If you don't want to talk to yourself, you can just exchange posts with other forum owners.

I would highly suggest talking to yourself under about 3-4 different usernames while doing a post exchange with a few other people. This should really open up the doors on your forums! Hope this works for you Smiley

Okay, I will talk to myself as much as possible. However, that won't help if nobody comes to my forum. How can I get more people to come and join?

Just chatting to yourself is not enough.  You have to talk to yourself in a keyword-rich manner no less! Cheesy

Well, prior to talking to yourself, sign up at a handful of social networking sites and start making acquaintances with whom you share a common interest (this would be your forum topic!)  Avoid the "rate my cleavage" type networking sites - remember, you are looking for people whose vocabulary extends a little beyond troglodytic grunts and groans and who might posses a slightly more developed and enriched view of the world.  Once you have mastered chatting yourself up, invite them along to your forum to join in!  You'll be surprised at how many will do it.  It really works, scout's honour! Thanks for the advice. What social networking sites are good for getting people to join a forum?

I would suggest being active on another forum and sticking your own forum in your signature. You could definently post around your own forum with other usernames, but what's the fun in that? You would definently get bored after a few posts.  Cheesy

Advertising your forum on different websites is definently A+.

You are right but it is necessary that you would have something on your forum to promote it. I am not in the favor to start advertising on other forums without any content. Someone should add some posts and users before any type of advertisement.

The "quickest" way is to use content creation users and bots to help your forum get threads and posts. RSS is also nice. Thisll build the stats, good for new members.

I shall like to know about connection between RSS and forums. How RSS can hrlp in forums? I think best way to promote your forum is to seek some help from friends and family. On the other hand talking with yourself from different users is also good.
